My step sisters teenage daughter recently described The Beatles as 'cheesy'.

Either tasts have changed or I have misunderstood the meanding of the word.

I alwals undertood it to mean elements of popular culture that are naff. Examples are The Eurovision Song Contest, the music of Stock, Atkin and Waterman and the 'Shake and Vac' advert.

Am I wrong on this?

In todays world, some of the lyrics of a few beatles songs could be described as cheesy. Particularly some of their earlier pop songs (see love me do). Put simple, if the beatles were around today singing that music they would be cheesy. However, as they were great musicians they would obviously have adapted for the times. You have to remember these songs were written 30-40 years ago and in that time they were certainly not cheesy. I can only assume that this is what the young girl meant, otherwise she is simply daft and uneducated. This is a common problem these days with the emergence of rap and hip hop. These kids that think they know everything, but have no idea of what it takes to make a good song. Anyway, hope i helped.

Some parts of their music/lyrics truly were cheesy at the time, and still are at the moment, YEAH, YEAH, YEAH!!! Over-simplistic pandering to the majority, trying to find something "nice" that 4 generations will tunelessly whistle to, is part of the definition of cheese. The difference between the Beatles and the pap of Spock, Aching and Watery's House of (S)Hits is they didn't have anything better. Never mind a 4th or 5th gear, they couldn't get out of first!! Even in France, they only have 1 different cheese for each day. Only in cartoons do mice only eat cheese. There has 2b an alternative.
For every She Loves You (perfect 3 minute pappy pop) you can more than offset it with the class/ground-breaking of things like A Day In The Life and Sergeant Pepper. All their songs are classics, to still be relevant and admired today, but different people prefer different things. If you prefer the ones that I reckon 2b a bit cheddary, that's only my opinion. As long as we both buy the CDs we're helping 2 jettison Mrs MacCartney, with the royalties!!!!

She has probably only heard a small portion of their music. For what ever reason, the songs that are the most popular and get the most exposure are not the best songs. (Think about Steely Dan - half the time you hear one their songs on the radio it is either Reeling in the Years or Rikki Dont Lose That Number. YeeHaw.)
Maybe one of the songs she knows is Yellow Submarine. Now that's a song with an extra helping of cheese. Maybe she needs a good primer on what their music is about. Some examples of what was popular in the UK before they came along. What they did at the begining, examples of how the music evolved through the years (including the good songs that you never hear on the radio) and what they did in their solo careers afterwards.
Yes, there is a little cheese sprinkled in there, but anyone that truley appreciates music has to at least acknowlege the contributions they made to modern music.

Some of the Beatles earlier stuff was extremely commercial and simplistic, but it was breakthrough at the time. I don't think they would call some of the later albums cheesy. Tell them to listen to some of the more profound tracks such as anything off Rubber Soul or one of the more psychedelic hits such as A Day In The Life, and I don't think they would still regard The Beatles as cheesy.

And gay is happy. I think the Beatles are 'cheesy' too. And i'm 41! The other ones you mentioned are 'naff'
Cheesy is not a bad thing necessarily. Sometimes i can be in the mood for 'cheesy'. Not that i can say that for 'naff'

I listen to the beatles..
I do find them cheesy in their massively over played hits, but in their more drug induced music, its better... but the beatles can get away with anything, so, kick her *** and tie her to a chair and make her listen to every album : )

I'm young but i was raised in a world of classic rock... so, i have no patience for new music and dont listen to ANY..

the thing is...is that teenagers are being forced to listen to cheesy music by the music corporation and they think it's good music...
unfortunately they've been fed this cheese for so long that they have been brainwashed into buying the next prefabricated song instead of listening to real music.
she just doesn't know the difference between cheese and a well balanced meal.

It's cheesy to these stupid kids who think good music is Shakira, Eminem, and the Cheetah Girls

They don't understand what music is and the context of the Beatles.

That is like saying the works of Pablo Picasso are cheesy. Hardly no one will agree with you and you will look ignorant. Who cares if idiots think they are cheesy? They are so great, their legacy speaks for itself.

What do the kids know nowadays with their myspace bands that sound like fake whiny punk and the pussycat whores- i mean dolls.
