This is a song written by George Gershwin for the musical "Porgy and Bess " and the first version was obviously that one.

Summertime was originally composed by George Gershwin in 1933. It was first sung by Billie Holiday. Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong did it as a duet. Sam Cooke did it as a pop song in 57 and Janis Joplin did it as a blues rock version. Hope all this helps.

Don't know about the original, but I suggest (if you're of a similar vintage 2 myself) you listen to the versions from the 80's by both FunBoy 3 and Bronski Beat. A classic song, given 2 vastly different modern(ish now, sadly!!) interpretations. CLASS!!!!!!
