i was jsut wondering if anyone knows anything about someone called Tailgunner Joe McCarthy and his purges and why do u think that : (quoted) ' that any anit-commyhnist wsentiment tends to remind us [hardcore american liberals] of Tailgunner Joe McCarthy and his purges'

well im not really sure of what u guys mean,
SO: he was a guy that believed that there were spies in the american governemtn who were working for the communists? so why do some pple think that he was a good guy and others a bad? did he murder someone or sumthing?

because mcCarthy was , justifiably and honestly, convinced that there were communists within the united states, aiding the USSR, imagine that, he was right.

The McCarthy era was a sad time for America. it was an inquisition into the private beliefs and even broke into private political thought. The idea that we must have the same political views is against everything good in democracy. Thr aftermath of that time was the realization that in America a group could get control and marginalize whole segments of our society. Adam above is an example of people who are the same cloth as McCarthy...many in America believe that is was not the witch hunt it was...but most here remember it as something to avoid. McCarthy disappeared into oblivion when he was not elected.
