Australia was part of the British Commonwealth. They were already at war with Germany and Italy when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. Japans idea was basically to drive all western nations out of the Pacific. When Japan reached them in the form of air raids only, Australia fought back. And in the Pacific War they were full participants. Why not? It was a question of survival as a nation and culture.

Australia served as a base for American forces and a port for the navy. Their own navy participated in many pacific naval battle including the battle of the coral sea. As for ground forces the first contact between the Australians and the Japanese was in Malaya where the Australians mounted an extremely successful ambush before linking up with the main army that fought a large battle resulting in 81 Australians killed and over 1,000 Japanese dead.

As British commonwealth they must support British.That was the reason.If the Japanese reach Australia they have no choice but fight them of or surender otherwise there no where else to withdraw except they can survive in Antartica.And lucky for them this worse scenario never happen.

Because they were allies of britain as part of the British Empire.
Japan got as close as New Guinea and managed to bomb northern Australia but they were defeated in the jungles of New Guinea.
