Hogan ruled the 80's, 90's and even now he's still an ICON. No matter who you are or what you do or even if you have ever watched wrestling, everybody worldwide knows who Hulk Hogan is and it's been like that since 85' after wrestlemania. Wrestling is today because of him and WWE is what it is today because of him. He has Charisma, he makes the crowd stand and cheer every time he's in the ring, his mic skills are awesome and he has beat anybody and everybody that is somebody. And honestly and not ashamed to admit it, every time his music drops the hair on my arms and neck still stand up after watching him wrestle for the past 20 years

Between the two, Hogan ruled, but only because of the other wrestlers. You had his arch enemy Piper, The Shiek and Nikolia and all the rest. Macho Man was just a very interesting character in a cast that included Jesse the Body, Jimmy Superfly (still), and Andre the Giant. It was ripe for the picking. Remember Hogan in Rocky III ? that was the turning point in his career. They had a cartoon, for crissake...

Hogan ruled the 80's--He held the Championship longer than anyone(other than Flair in the old NWA or WCW)beating opponent after opponent without any trouble.
While Macho Man held the Inter-Continental Championship was a close 2nd.

Hogan was more of a media sensation because it was during the Reagan era of being a good American and people were proud to be Americans again. The Hulkster embodied all of the things that people were being taught were good. Not to meniton Macho Man played a heel quite a bit of the time and they always made it seem like he was abusing Miss Elizabeth.

i believe hogan. he was the highest paid for a long time if that means anything. hogan was/is known to many people who did not follow wrestling. he was on tv shows like the a-team, snl, among others. savage i don't think was as well known outside of wrestling circles. hogan would have been to wrestling what jordan was to basketball.
