i own a repair shop, and yes it can,i have seen people catch the woods on fire shooting these things off, especially on the 4th of July people decide that they want to light the sky up,well in one case someone lite the woods on fire here in Tennessee one time,it can go what ever way the wind will catch it and take it to,usually they,ll fall sort of downwards, but i have seen them go in different directions before,so if your going to shoot one off be care full, you can get burned with it,good luck.

It is illegal to fire a flare gun when there is not an emergency unless you have cleared it with the Coast Guard in an official test firing. You should wear gloves when using a flare gun, it could drip hot slag, the flare can come down and start a fire. It is loud but not as loud as a hand gun. Your local Coast Guard Auxillary or United States Sail and Power Squadron can set up a safety program where outdated flares are fired, because it is important to know how to fire them. Check on Google for another piece of information, some of the Olin flare guns were recalled .

Flare guns are designed to be fired over water, which is flat, and nonflammable except for the boats on it. However, they can, and do come down unpredictably. Good manufactureres attempt to design them so that they burn out before they land, but this is never certain.
Using a flare gun in dry hilly terrain is not reccomended. Using a flare gun in a residential area is almost certainly illegal.
Breezes tend to make matters worse, as they can fan flames from anything that catches fire. If a flare gun catches something on fire, you could be charged with arson, and if anyone dies in the fire, ou could be charged with murder. Serious stuff.
Are flare guns loud? Well sure. They're only packed with about as much explosive as a shotgun, so you'd probably want to use earplugs if you fire it.
I'd consider revising your plans until they do not involve firing flares in hilly residential areas.

Flares are very hot, it is illegal to fire them anywhere except on a distressed boat. In some states it is considered a firearm . It is loud , it can easily cause a fire, they are made to fire over water so they can land in water to be put out. Sometimes they burn under water also. It could easily cause a roof fire. It could easily cause a grass fire. Magnesium flares are a type of fire that can not be put out with a fire extinguisher because it can take the oxygen from water. It a class D fire.

Yes to all the questions you asked! Plus you can hurt or kill yourself or somebody else. These things are not toys, - and some of them are not as sturdy as they could be! Breeze or no, - it can land anywhere, (even on you). you have wind (or breeze) component, plus the angle of the trajectory as fired, -- plus imperfection and deviations on frontal area of the projectile! They have no accuracy - as a pistol or rifle might have. The barrel is too short, the fit is too loose in barrel (and not rifled), and the charge is not as powerful. Firing a "full powered" regular "gun" with a caliber this big would most likely knock you down!
