They are saying that the poem, "The Raven" was as popular as a hit somg would be today. they aren't referring to any particular song.

PS that is my favorite poem of all time.

I believe it may be the song Knocking on Heavens Door.

You know "knock, knock, knocking on heavens door" just like the raven knocking OK thought about it...maybe it is the song Bird, bird, bird, bird is the word. I really don't know but thought I would add some humor...with all this said I tend to lean toward Roch cop...they used the sentence as a comparison of, at the time, a one hit wonder, like a suddenly great and funky song the fame that it (the raven) was spontaneous and quick.

I think they just meant that his poem was popular and everyone talked about it, kind of like today how people will talk about a hit song, but never poetry anymore. I liked The Raven, but it's a little too dark to be one of my favorites.

There is no particular song that they are speaking of. They are simply comparing Poe's success to that of a Pop star's today!

BTW, The Baltimore Ravens is named after that poem... Edgar Allen Poe was influential after he wrote that poem. The "raven" was his breakthrough.
