The Namib Desert desert occupies an area of around 50 000 km², stretching some 1,000 miles from africas center(1 600 km) along the Atlantic Ocean coast of Namibia, which is named after this desert. Its east-west width varies from 30 to 100 miles (50-160 km). The Namib Desert also reaches into southwest Angola.
The area is considered to be the oldest desert in the world, having endured arid or semi-arid conditions for at least 80 million years. Its aridity is caused by the descent of dry air cooled by the cold Benguela current along the coast. It has less than 10 mm (0.4 inches) of rain annually and is almost completely barren.

Coastal deserts are still arid. These deserts are affected by cold ocean currents. They have are less stable as other deserts. They can have a winter fog that keeps solar radiation at a minimum. The Atacama desert, in South America, has about 1 millimeter rain or more about every 5-20 years, making it the driest in the world.

They are arid regions found in cooler climates that occur in moderately cool to warm areas of the world. An example is the Atacama desert of Chile in South America.

There are no coastal deserts, but - if there were - you can bet every retired person who does NOT live in Florida would be buying a condo there.
