I haven't had a real tree since my in-laws tree caught fire and burned down their living room.

I love real trees. Always had one up until last year. The artificial ones now look real.
In order to decide which is best you need to ask yourself a few questions.
1. Do I have time to water...DAILY?
2. Do I want to clean up the mess (needles) when I take it down?
3. Do I have room for it? Real ones tend to be wider that artificial ones.
4. Does my town have curbside tree removal after the holidays?
If you do get a real one, make sure you cut from a tree farm so you know it is fresh and add sugar to the water. 1 tsp to 4 cups. If you water everyday faithfully, it won't loose as many needles but you will loose some. Spruce was always my favorite but my husband liked pine. It is a personal choice. Pine needles are longer and easier to clean up. Also, get a giant tree bag for under so when Christmas is over, you just pull the bag up and throw it out. I use to get my tree 2 weeks before Christmas and take it down New Years Day.

I saw a Christmas special on HBO years ago called 'Emmet Otter's Jug band Christmas' and in it the otters went out to cut a twig as a Christmas tree. This way they didn't have to kill a tree to decorate their home temporarily. I adopted this tradition and have done it ever since. I live in a small apartment and don't need a large tree. I go out to the park and find a pine tree that needs a lower limb trimmed and take two cuttings of equal size. Then I bring them home and tape them together to form a mini tree. I have a picture of last year's Christmas twig on my Yahoo 360 photo album. I never have a problem with the needles drying out.
Another idea I have used: after your tree is in the stand, float a ping pong ball in it (to use as a visual reminder of how low the water is getting). Then I used a tube/hose connected with black duct tape to a funnel and I tied this to the tree trunk before decorating it. By doing this, I never had to crawl under the tree to water it. I can stand and pour and watch the float rise up to know it's filled up again. Use an old hose or buy a 7 foot piece of tubing from a hardware store. This way it will always be about the right size.

i use to get real trees but they allways died on me.. probally because i never added water daily like your supposed to...... If u do some tips would be 1) add water daily, 2) Keep it away from a heat vent 3) have the end recut when u purchase it.. other wise the bottom seals up from the tree sap and it wont suck up the water. 4) buy the tree from a tree place or cut your own.. dont buy from home depot or one of those places .. trees tend to be cut to early. Hope this helps :)

My friend doesn't buy real trees cos he says an artificial one lasts for life. It wouldn't be so bad but the dopey sod throws it out after new years, then buys a new one just before xmas each year.

not usually but a few weeks ago we were helping some people move to a smaller place and the lady had this weird potted plant called a norfork island pine -- she gave it to my brother but his wife hates it so maybe I'll get it as my christmas tree --- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Araucaria_heterophylla
