How do the doctor's etc. think it could effect the baby?

I do not want an epidural, too scared, I have heard too many bad things to risk it. I believe childbirth is a natural thing but I also wouldn't mind a little help with the pain for before and after, mostly after. Thank you for all the helpful replies! They are all helpful! BTW- I am in the US.

I have had three normal deliveries, and had the same pain relief every time.
Entonox, (gas and air) and pethidine.
When I had my first and third babies, they were quite sleepy just after the birth and both took a long time to even take a feed. I was told this was because of the pethidine. It does cross the placenta to baby, and will make them drowsy. They were both fine after a good sleep though.xxx

Most Dr.s permit an epidural to be inserted as quickly as you desire. Which might be as quickly as you're admitted. You might then have the medicinal drugs began at any time. It was once believed that obtaining an epidural too quickly might rationale exertions to run longer. This has been verified fake. Of path, a few Dr.s might nonetheless make you wait, so I might ask your OB how she does matters. Keep in brain, each time you request your epidural, they first ought to get the Dr. in to insert it. This can take as much as an hour. So, ask prior alternatively than later, while you are begging for comfort. No. You may not be stretched out. And they deliver you not anything. P.S. I used to be prompted with my final baby. I had the epidural inserted earlier than I felt any anguish. I had the medicinal drugs began while my contractions grew to be very extreme. The medicinal drugs, at that factor, take mins to paintings.

It all depends on where you live-for example in some countries they give laughing gas (nitrous oxide) but not in the U.S. I, myself, got Stadol through an IV and it helped a little. I also got a numbing shot in my vagina right before I delivered to help me out which was great. My best advice is to talk to your doctor about all of your options. Some doctors are against meds, others are for it, and you don't want to find out at the last minute that the doctor isn't going to do what you want him to do. Also write up a birth plan so that if the doctor isn't there and someone else delivers you that they know what you want. Good luck, you'll get through it!

remember that the other medication that they give you is given through an IV and can only be given up to 7 cm dialation. They have to stop it because it does affect the baby making them sleepy. So they need to give it time to wear off before the baby is born so they don't have any problems when born. If you want pain relief up until and through the birth you have to go with the epidural.

You can get demerol which they usually give you before your able to recieve an epidural. But all demerol does is take the edge off a little bit but not so much when the contractions are stronger.

Gas and air is fantastic! I loved it and even though everything I had read said that you couldn't get too much of it, I did, and nearly knocked myself out with it.
That was when the midwife came in and yelled at me!

But it was excellent stuff.

Gas and air has NO effect on the baby.

I got the gas with my second through 2 or 3 contractions, wasn't worth the effort it took to breathe it in. Only good thing was that it gave me something to concentrate on during contractions

I got laughing gas, (which by the way, doesn't do sh*t for the pain). I also got something else injected into my IV that the nurse said I was gonna love, but it didn't do anything but make me dry heave in between contractions. I'm not sure what it was.

I went into premature labor and got staydol I loved it. The pain went away immediately. I don't know if it affected the baby (he is perfectly healthy) but if he was anything like me, he was very happy.
