Australia was involved in world war 2 for the some reason it was in the first... In WW2 Britain declared war against Germany and called on Australia for assistance. Australia returned that call and issued troops immediatly into war armed to the teeth and ready to do some damage... Also the fact that over 95% of Australia had a British background helped along that sense of duty to the mother country.

The Aussies were fighting alongside the Brits in Africa until the Japanese reached New Guinea and were bombing the port of Darwin in Australia. It was then necessary to withdraw the Australian and New Zealand troops to protect their homelands and drive the Japanese back. The Australian Navy also distinguished itself in WWII.
And this is only a tiny part of the story!

Because it´s part of the British commonwealth, together with New Zealand they send troops under the ANZAC denomination and place themselves usually under the overall command of a BRitish officer.

The Aussie's were just bored with drinking Foster's and chasing kangaroo's. It was something to do. They protected the allies from getting eatin' by crocs!
