I'm an adult but my Mom still comes over to do the turkey.

She spends the night and gets it all ready the night before.....then she gets up about 5 AM and puts it in the oven.

It all depends on the size of the bird and if it's fresh or frozen. Last year I had a frozen turkey and it took 3 days to thaw in the refrigerator. I then cleaned it and cooked it about 7 hours at a lower temperature, covered until the last hour. I didn't stuff it,I baked my dressing separate. This cuts down the cooking time considerably. If you read the directions on the package,it tells you how many hours it takes per pound of meat.I also baste it every hour that it's cooking. And before I stick it in the oven, I insert pats of butter between the meat and the skin. I never buy a name brand turkey such as Butterball, I make my own. We always eat our big dinner around 2pm, then retire to living room for football, and raid the kitchen around six for leftovers. Happy holidays to you!

I like to put our turkey on in the moring right around 9am or 10 am. So we can have turkey cooking smell most of the day. However, my sister in law might have Thanksgiving again this year. If not we get our own bird.

I usually put it on in the morning around 8:00 am. You don't have to cook it all night. It will dry it out. Most of the turkeys I get take about 4 hours to prepare.
