Help on Aveyond?

Iv'e been playing Aveyond and I go into the wilderness and follow the dirt path. But when I reach the end, it tells me that I'm heading away from the Academy. What am I doing wrong?

I think you should buy a map. It's available at the town store. If I'm right, you should just head north and not north west.

The academy is in the NE corner of the map. You have to go up a ladder to get on the right path.
