They both tell the reader about something, so I don't understand how they're different.

A descriptive essay is self-explanatory. It describes in great detail, for example, a visual scene, like a mountain range or a tourist attraction. An informative essay usually tells how to do something, like create a website or put something together from a schematic. Or it can be a biographical sketch of famous or unknown person. There is a lot of similarity between the two types; however the first one appeals more to the aesthetic senses and the other strictly gives information. At least that's the way I would discern the two. It's been a while since I went to school, so I'm not really up on the more current interpretations of the different forms of essays. You might want to consult the library or the web for more up-to-date information, as teaching methods have changed considerably over the years, and I'd hate to have led you astray.

The descriptive essay relies on concrete, sensory detail to communicate its point. Remember, we have five senses, not one or two.

The author of a descriptive essay must carefully select details to support the dominant impression. In other words, the author has the license to omit details which are incongruent with the dominant impression unless the dominant impression is one which points out the discrepancies.

Description very often relies on emotion to convey its point. Because of this, verbs, adverbs, and adjectives convey more to the reader than do nouns.

Unless the description is objective, you must be sure that the dominant impression conveys an attitude.

informative essay is to provide information that is not generally known to readers in order to teach them something

a desciptive essay will describe each and every thing you do and what you experience and notice or supply a desription of what you're explaining. Informative is amazingly uninteresting and might have a coaching experience to it. not so descriptive in different words possibly a background or clarification of a few thing
