Apparently the Borat character was originally a reporter called Kristo from Albania which was first shown on TV in 1994 & adapted by a producer into Borat from Kazakhsatn - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacha_Baron_Cohen
Whether this is the case or not firstly a lot of s*** has happened since 1994 & personally I really I think they should have created a fictional nation so as not to offend any one in particular. Most people can laugh at traits that they know apply to them as a nation but no-one anywhere in the world will appreciate some idiot who portrays their OWN country in the wrong light ...
I think the Kazakhstan Govt are being very smart now & are taking the high road & by inviting Sacha Baron Cohen to their country to show him what life is really like in Kazakhstan - I really hope he accepts their invitation & does an unprejudiced documentary but not holding my breath, some people are just out for the easy laughs & think that making a few jokes against their own religion exempts them from offending others and being oblivious to the negative reaction their fame will cause ....

Even the dogs in the street know that Borat is not a typical representation of the Kazakhstani way of life but he has done more for that country's tourist industry in 1 week than they could achieve in their 15 years of independence.
Up until today when I read an interesting article in the Daily Telegraph, I didnt know Kazakhstan is the 9th largest country in the world but with a population of only 16 million,is one of the top producers of oil and gas and has scenery to rival that of New Zealand . . . . . . . but then I must remind you,im from Ireland, a country where we all still keep a cow tied up in the front room and to avoid bad luck we lift our hats & say "top of the morning" to every little green leprechaun we meet !! Cheers

A simplified representation of someone from a country that we know very little about. He obviously chose that country as he was unlikely to insult anyone. However, Borat has just got more and more popular and poor guy has ended up being invited to Kazakhstan by the govt who are worried that we think they really drink fermented horses urine etc.

Borat is the British comedian Sasha Baron Cohen but more known here in England as Ali G. He claims to be a journalist who is "6th most famous person" in Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan is one of the not really known countries and their government is trying their best to present Kazakhstan as a decent country to the world. But Borat is not helping them at all. I admit that his acts are funny but insulting a whole country and its people is just not right. He even claims that he doesn't know this Ali G and that even worsens my perception of this person....

From what I can see, Borat is just another vehicle to perpetuate the anti semite myth.

Borat is an example of all European semi-urbanized, semi-developed countries who we know almost nothing about, and whose customs and daily rites date back many, many years. (and can be quite odd)
Like Albania. Who knows anything about Albania?
