cosmic, discriminating against another to make up for something does not fix the problem. So my suggestion would be to repeal affirmative action, for a start. If you can prove someone discriminated against someone due to race, then penalize them, but don't assume everyone will do so.

tammyc, your answer is hypocritical fromthe start. How does preventing someone from getting a job due to their race, make sure everyone has an equal opportunity?

dukalink, so are the people who did not get the job, due to affirmative action, now eligable to get a job using affirmative action, since they were "denied employment for being otherwise eligible for the job, save for factors beyond their control that played a large part of the final decision."?

As a woman, I have always been insulted by the idea that I needed affirmative action to get a job.

I'll get by on my own qualifications, thanks.

Affirmative action was a great concept.......but it's gone so far over the edge it has become racist in the opposit direction. Quotas or fear of being sued has contributed to employers giving jobs to less qualified people. I'd love to see computerized interviews-where the employer can not meet the applicant face to face until they offered the job. Dangerous? Not really. I know meeting someone, you look for 'personality fits' as well as other subtle things--but it is the only way to ensure complete fairness. Afterall, I've known heavy people who were denied jobs because of their appearance. So, if you have to hire sight unseen, and the interview was conducted much like IM--and the person does not work out.............people have been fired for being @ssholes.

confident! I accept as true with each and every thing you're saying. And the kicker is that the liberals do not look to get this. that is ironic how the liberals declare to be the occasion that champions for social justice, yet then commits acts of criminal bigotry. Affirmative action is the definition of discrimination. It jogs my memory of the pre civil rights circulate of the 1960's. Discrimination it rather is legalized. that is disgusting. And there are people who rather ask your self why i'm a conservative?

Affirmative action is a policy to make amends to those memeber of society who were denied employment for being otherwise eligible for the job, save for factors beyond their control that played a large part of the final decision.

(Since I can't use the word 'color', as that is considered race, it maked the definition wordy and smacks of being too PC)

First, I would like to point out the overwhelming amout of white males that are commenting about affirmative action, since they feel it negatively affects them. I would also like to point out how misinformed many of you are about affirmative action.

Yes, I will admit to being a minority, and I will also admit to having a white sounding name (its english). I will also say that on all of my college applications, I declined to answer the *choose your race* question. I was accepted into many universities, and I chose to go to one of the Big 10 schools. So I do understand where many people have a problem with allowing minorities into schools for diversity. Some schools have taken it too far to do such a thing.

But here's the reality on Affirmative Action: it isn't just about getting a job and getting into school. Affirmative Action is something that was created to assist people that are minorities...not neccesarily racial minorities, but minorities of the society (meaning they are not of the majority). This includes women, people with disabilities, and people from low -income families.

Women need affirmative action if they want to open up their own business. The government yearly allocates a certain percentage of grant money specifically for women who want to open their own businesses. Without affirmative action, that money will be up for grabs by anybody. Also, without affirmative action, there will be no scolarships available for women only. So if you are a woman, and you are against affirmative action, and you recieved a scholarship that only women could apply for, or you recieved a grant for a business you started, my friend, you need to give the money back or change your tone.

In addition to women, affirmative action helps those with disabilities. At public universities, those people who have learning or physical disabilities, the government allocates money for assistance programs, helping these students with everything ranging from tutoring to residential accomadations on campus. By removing affirmative action, you are creating an issue with those people who may not have the opportunity to do well in school without the assistance.

And then you have your low - income families. To qualify for this, you could be any gender, any age, and any race, but you have to not make over a certain amout of money. Those people, often in inner cities, and dirt poor rural areas, often dont have money to send their children to better k-12 schools; these children probably dont even get a good enough education from the local school due to its lack of funding. They are often taught outdated material, and tend to do more poorly on standardized state and college tests than those students from more affluent neighborhoods. Without affirmative action, these students would not be accepted into any college because they are underqualified. If they are accepted, not only does it improve diversity, but it helps bring up the standard of living for our nation.

Also, without affirmative action, you would not have programs such as Medicare, the CHIP program (insurance for children from lower income families), and even head start programs. The decision to remove affirmative action will affect everybody from rich people with austistic children to dirt poor white males. If you want to rally one way or another, please make an informed decision.

Its an extreme racist policy, each individual should be given the same considerations regardless of their skin color, affirmative action ensures that its rigged to favor one color over another!

yea cosmiccastaway, I have a solution, scrap affirmative action....period!

To be honest it is a discriminatory practise. It is designed to help level the playing field, but since it has not been levelled for so long it does offer minorities a slight advantage. Of course I am yet to see another solution to stop sexism and racism in the workplace. Do you have an ideas??

The whole point in affirmative action is to make sure that everyone has an equal oppurtunity, so yes employers do have to hire a certain amount of every race and every gender and pay people eually for the work they do!!!!!!!!! The whole point in affirmative action is to prevent employers from discriminating!!!!!!
