"You can't solve a problem until the majority of the people believe you have a problem that needs to be solved," that's so very true and it does not just apply to the economy.
"Polls suggest that Americans have only a vague sense of their government's long-term fiscal prospects" this is true also. i only understand the gist of it.
"...worst result of racking up a big deficit — the outrage of making our children and grandchildren repay the debts of their elders." (>_<)
"Why is America so fiscally unprepared for the next century? Like many of its citizens, the United States has spent the last few years racking up debt instead of saving for the future. " not my mom, she not stupid enough to rack up on any kind of debt.
"tax increases and benefit cuts. " ahhhhhhhhhhh!!!! not me!!!
i'm pessimistic because i'm a realist. and the whole thing about medicare, well, that's just a big mess. i have no idea on how they're planning on tackling that issue. i just hope that the 2008 candidates don't walk around these issues.

How can people keep on blaming the Democrats they do not hold enough seats right now to make a difference. Sorry but some Rep. did not want to pass the Medicare bill. Now who are you going to blame? Did you read the bill? The sad truth is Congress and The House attaches impassible bills to bills that are extremely important in hopes of getting then passed. READ PEOPLE READ

He's right, of course, and the biggest culprit is Medicare. I have no solution for that one. But another biggie is Social Security, and that could be fixed -- but won't be, especially if the Democrats take power in Congress. They shot down Bush's reform program without even considering it, and I will not forgive them for that: the most simple-minded investment scheme, as an alternative to Social Security, would have me over $600,000 richer than I am under Social Security. That's not chump change, folks.

Hey, if the GAO says that we're heading for disaster, then we are.
The Government Accountability Office is the last branch of the government which is unbiased, and doesn't need to worry about making themselves look good to please the voters.
So much for the economy heading in the right direction, huh?
