Yes. Mine wore out because I was using bad CD-Rs, and one CD I was burning kept writing the lead-out for 2 hours. When I finally noticed it and stopped it, afterward I couldn't use my drive for cds anymore. It wouldn't recognize anything that was cd. (The DVD-RW part still worked, though).

I've also heard of lasers wearing out, so I assume lots and lots of use would cause it to go as well.
