Esperanto was originally created for this purpose, but never caught on really.

I cannot think of a language that is easy for absolutely anyone to learn, and the issur of different alphabets would doubtless turn up to cause extra difficulty. Virtually any language you ask about, someone will say "It's a really hard language ot learn!" English and French are hard to pronounce, Japanese has strange sentence structures and rules about what words to use, Swahili is apparently so hard that even native speakers don't like to talk in it (I have been told)...

There's probably some language like Maori or Thai or Icelandic that no one is likely to think of that is actually insanely easy to learn, and if such a language exists, then that's the one. But I do not know of any certain easy-to-learn language.

very good question
I have heard from several sources now, that English is becoming the most wide spread of the languages.
I'm not sure, however, that it would make the best language.
However there is the argument that since a large percentage of people in the world strive to learn some sort of English, it just could work. Chalk one up for the entertainment industry.

there was one, it was called cavemen then each race became defined and got MAJOR dialects because of the environment.

each race has different vocal structures...mainly cause each environment required a certain sound to project a understandable means of communication.

perfect examples, Spanglish and Ebonics. in which these languages will develope into a completely new languages over time such as Old Anglish did when the Latin languages were introduced by the Romans and Normans etc. etc. English is still no doubt a germanic language, so similiar to german and norse but so different as well. Italian and Spanish are very similiar as well cause they derived some Latin....

Because of the expansion of the old British Empire, english became a second language in a lot of countries. It is accepted as the business language of the world now. It seems logical that it be English, and should the USA ever become the master nation, lets hope they learn it so we underlings will understand them.

Mandarin, Cantonese or Japanese?

And, no, English is absolutely not the easiest to learn as a second language (another poster said that). It is one of the most difficult second languages to learn in the entire world.

I am under the impression that English was chosen as the universal language. I often wondered why a latin based language such as spanish wasn't chosen instead.since itailian, french and portugues are also from latin. I would think asain languages or chinese would be way to difficult .
