The character of Thing (the hand) in The Addam's Family and Addam's Family Values was played by Christopher Hart, and was done using special effects including blue screen technology, where he was wearing a blue suit or sleeve, to block out the rest of his body except for the hand. Mr. Hart played the part in both movies.

In the original TV series (1964) the hand called "Thing" was Ted Cassidy who also portrayed Lurch.
In the new Addams Family TV series (1998), Steven Fox was "Thing" and John DeSantis was Lurch
In the movies Christopher Hart was "Thing" while Lurch was played by Carel Struycken

Ted Cassidy played Lurch in the TV series but also played Thing ( the hand ) When they had to play at the same time thing was then played by another actor.
