I met her on my course she’s really nice, and she hangs around with me now but the person she was close to last year is still on the course and when she sees him with his new mates she laughs at them having fun like she would like to be part of it, I’m not ‘fun’ so she must be bored I don’t want her hanging around with me just because she feels I would be upset if she left, and I don’t want her to feel trapped with me.
So should I push her away so she can go and be with her mate and not feel guilty about leaving me?
But I like having here around and its hard for me to make friends, I can tell her why I’m being cold, and I don’t really want to push her away but I want her to feel free to leave me, I’m fine on my own, I don’t want her to be bored for the next year? What do I do?

Woah, I'm actually going through the very same thing at the moment. What I did was just pushed her away by avoiding her and letting her hang out with her new fun, exciting buddy. Now I'm all sad and depressed because I lost a friend. So don't push her away, because I did that and I really regret it all right now.

What I'd do (if I could do this over again) is just tell her, "If you want to go hang out with your other friend(s) you can, I don't mind." or something like that.

You have no clue as to what she would want do you? All you have are assumptions and speculations. You haven't bothered talking to her. How can you consider ANYONE a friend if you don't talk to them? The person you need to be discussing all of this is HER.

You don't have to "push" her away-- just find some other interests and stay busy. If she is really your friend she will come back.
