I think you think there are more sides to a story than just one, because you said "different people have different perceptions of the actual event and interpret it in different ways" that would say to me that there are as many sides to a story as there are people to give their perceptions of said story! For there to be one side to a story, everybody would have to agree. I suppose that could happen.

There can only ever be the truth, as interpretation is gained by perception of an event, so there is only ever one story, once a person is informed of the truth, then there are no more sides to be taken, unless taken in an emotional way.

There ARE 2 sides to every story.. Sometimes one side is more correct than the other...sometimes they are equally valid...but there is always a third side (sometimes one of the two sides, may also be this third side simultaneously)... usually humans, however, don't go to this side because it would be seeding ground to the other side (they usually go this route because of ignorance, and lack of perception to see the third more unifying route), and therefore, for human motives (say, they are in a confrontation ), one human decides that holding some information back is in her/his best interests.
Nevertheless, there is always ONE side, besides the two sides of confrontational social dillemma, which usually has nothing to do with self-interests, and incorporates parts of both, and is more full and wholly accurate than the other two or its seperate parts.
Some people have a hard time 'seeing' this 'third' side...but it is often there...others 'see' it, but hold it back, because their 'side' is more beneficial to them and their motives, so they try to present that ' 1 side' as the correct one, and often is more correct than the other one, without delving into the more perfect third side, because it would seed ground to the other guy (yet they would still beat the other guy because 'he' knew the superiority of his own side relative to the other)----and the other guy, may use the reasons of the third side to go against the reasons for the side of the first guy (say, on a tv confrontation in hard-ball...and the masses, normally numbed and cannot see the third side...will take such as weakness and side with the second guy against the first guy...again, due to ignorance or stupidity)....so the first guy, never delves into the 'third' side, because 'he' knows his other person, may or may not see it, and would only use it against 'his' motives.... in order to attain their goals over the other guy.
If its just a philosophical approach...some will notice the third side late, but keep to their side because of pride....there are a lot of factors...
BUT in general, there is usually ONE side, which incorporates parts of the 2 sides of the 'story' which is more accurate than either and the most accurate in general and mathematically.

Personally believe there are as many sides to the story as the number of people that saw or heard any part or all of it. Everyone sees things in a different way. Most people only realize 3 sides, the two involved plus one outsider, but forget that the two involved have a third sight (mine, yours, ours). So there is really is no right or wrong answer.

Like the many sides of a diamond, there are so many sides to a every story. There are no "2" sides. There is the story as TEXT but behind the story is a CONTEXT. Then one has to take into account culture, religion, gender sensitivity issues and other concerns. And, most often, when stories "TRAVEL" through time, the meaning of these stories may change.

I truly believe there are a multitude of sides of every story. You are exactly right that people have different perceptions and interpretations, thus multiple sides of one event are very probable.

Yeah - everyone has different perceptions of the event; there are the facts, there are the various participants' and witnesses' interpretations and there is the record that history makes. Those versions ofthe story will depend upon the various interests of the reporters - e.g. the philosophical, statistical, aesthetic, factual and emotional interests.
"The story" is subjective, and the various perspectives give it its depth and colour.

as a regular arbiter of peoples troubles, i find there are always two sides to a story. A will only tell you his version of events. B has different recollections.
none, well not many people carry voice recorders all the time. so we always embellish or understate conversations and events to a third party... and ive always been switzerland..i stay neutral, i dont apportion blame, or point the finger of guilt. these things happen, and they happen to us all. only when you see all the parts of the puzzle does the picture emerge...
and the truth is the truth.

Everyone perceives an event, taste, smell, sight, or story slightly different then the other. So yes, there are 2 sides to every story.
