Runescape is the only free game that I hear is pretty good online. I've never played it, mostly cause I'm not cheap enough to pass up quality for saving a little bit of cash. If you're really willing to pay for an actual game that's online you should start with World of Warcraft. It's an online RPG that can be very fun and addictive. The only problem is, even though it's cheap by online game standards, it's no where near free with a $20 price tag and a $14 a week subscription fee(But the first month is free). If you own a 360, Xbox live is one of the greatest things to ever happen to gaming. It's $50 for an entire years worth of subscription.

ragnarok Online is pretty good.It is just like runescape but with better graphics.
Then again...Fly FF is like Ragnarok with better graphics. I also played Gunbound and Survival Project. For a free version of Ragnarok i reccomend www.animaRO.com or http://ceres-ro.net/

The other option is Final Fantasy XI. It is and MMORPG and is well worth the 15 or so dollars a month. My whole household plays.
