Hang them outside and let them air for a day, then wash in hot water with dawn dish soap. Needs to be a sunny day
Dry cleaning will also get the diesel out of them for good.

For safety reasons, you should never wash anything in a electric washer that has a gas smell to it. Any kind of fuel or oil staining. Use a bucket and some hot water along with the other things mentioned above. After washing an air drying the item, then you can machine wash the garment.

you didn't mention if the clothing was washable. If it isn't, there is a pretty sneaky but easy couple solutions. Fabreeze is supposed to take odors out of clothing. And then there is the old fashion cure: Take the clothing, throw it into a garbage bag with a few peppermint tea bags (dollar stores sell them now, so pretty cheap solution). Close the bag up tight for a week. Every day, shake the closed bag a few times. At the end of the week, take them out and sniff. If the smell is still there, throw in a few more tea bags; put them back in the bag and repeat for another week.

I had that trouble when washing my mother's clothes. She is mentally ill and until I got her some help started refusing to take a bath. I could not get the nasty body odor out of her clothes. I bought some lysol. Any kind will do but there is a blue colored lysol that has a very fresh scent. Got the stink out and made the clothes smell fresh. Don't use a lot! It is very strong.

You need to take them to a dry cleaners as that type of smell will only come out with perclorethylene or the cleaning fluid. The odor is from an oil based product and water will not remove it. Once it has been drycleaned you can go ahead and wash it if you'd like. All of this is of course if it IS drycleanable.

Well, if they are white you could bleach them.Color safe bleach for things that aren't white. Hot water helps if it won't shrink. Sometimes a little extra laundry soap. Also, if you put a little ammonia in it helps take out the smell. Sometimes if you soak them before washing them it helps too.
