For the same reason that we people who know it is called "soda" say that people who use the word "sodapop" are hicks. The answer is because they are hicks, part of a hierarchy of hickness with the pop people at the very bottom.

I haven't heard that they are hicks, but they are... not normal people who do that.

I think of the kind of people who say "pop" and what I get a mental image of is a kind of dumb guy who works in a bakery. Not a hick, but kind of not a bright person. That's just what appears in my head when I think of it.

I thought pop was more of a "northern" thing and soda more "southern". I'm not sure about sodapop.

they aren't kicks however it's not called sodapop or pop. It's called coke.
