Meiosis produces gametes, which are haploid cells containing half the number of chromosomes of somatic cells. Somatic cells have 46 chromosomes, while haploid gametes contain 23 chromosomes. For example, the sperm and the egg are gametes. And that is why when the sperm fertilizes the egg, you get 46 chromosomes.
