Well - do you think because their job is like laundry - NEVER done! They are always trying to save the human race from themselves, they are not usually treated very nicely because they are different, AND anyone they get close to or love is a target. Plus, once you are on the top - the biggest, the strongest, the smartest, the richest - what is there to strive for and without a goal or something to strive for - life gets very boring, very fast. I think that is why so many rich people get accentric - they have anything and everything they want.

I think it's partly a result of their idealism, what inspired them to use their powers for the public good in the first place. If I spent the prime of my life fighting crime and saving lives and never got a good word for it (the way Jonah Jameson always called Spider man a menace) I think I might become cynical and bitter toward those ingrates after a while. Also partly the frustration that there are always a new generation of stupid guys who always think they're the first to think of robbing some place and they think they have a perfect plan and they won't get caught and innocent bystanders keep on getting hurt. Ask any cop what's the worst part of their job.

PS, I'm adding the time and date to all my questions and answers from now on and I want to encourage everybody to do the same. Perhaps if enough of us do this, the YA staff will add it as an automatic feature. Spread the word, and happy answering!

The simple answer is that they are, deep down, just like everyone else. Look at so many of the old people in the real world. A scary number of them are bitter, angry and ... well, crusty. As heroes get older they too become embittered that their glory days are behind them and that the world is not as "simple" as it once was.
