In another question a described a work colleague as an Islamist i.e. as far as I knoew he followed Islam. Someone posted a reply saying "he was a Muslim not an Islamist". What are they saying?

Someone who follows Islam is called a Muslim or sometimes a Muslimah if the person is female. I am a Muslim myself and we never use the term "Islamist" this seems to be some made up name given by ignorant people who just assume this is the proper name without actually researching and reading up on the religion I suggest a good and genuine source online would be www.sunnipath.com which can answer any questions you might have on Islam. Hope this is of some help to you, and any others out there who have no knowledge of Islam except from the media.

A Muslim is a follower of the religion Islam.
An Islamist is somebody who wants to have an Islamic government. This would not be a government with a Muslim ruler, but a govenment that is based on the tenets of Islam. In other words, Islam would be the "established religion," the government religion.

islam is faith and muslim is a religion i.e christianity is a faith and a mormon is a religion
