I sometimes pity the Asian people for studying so hard and not getting any break. I think most of them lack confidence in their social skills because they spend to much time on their books. I am not saying all, but most are shy and not able to approach strangers as easily as the Caucasions or Africans or Hispanics.

Being Asian myself, I think it has a lot to do with the family name. Some Asian parents (mine not included) pressure their kids like crazy to get into the Ivies, the UCs or any other good school not because undergrad years really matter, but because of family honor. Personally, I don't have the parental pressure problem, but I'm afraid of letting my family down, so to speak. Also, I feel the pressure that other parents put on their kids; I don't want to fall back, so I work my *** off.

If you look at Asian society as a whole, the community or family unit is emphasized rather than the individual. So you might see Asians readily approaching other Asians, but perhaps not non-Asians.

Note:
My case may be more severe than others you'll see, given that I actually live in Asia. Asian kids I know in the US don't study as much and seem to have more fun than we do here in Shanghai. International schools = terrible sometimes, because you get all these Asian kids who aren't American and thus have to work that much harder to get into a prestigious university.

Bear in mind that many of us overseas Asians still find time to party (loads of clubs available in Shanghai) and socialize whether its questing with friends on WoW (it's an MMO, artard), getting together with a group of friends for sticky pics at the mall, going to the swankiest restaurants in town, whatever. Work hard, play hard?

Just one addition - culture, and that depends on the amount of culture one is exposed to as well. (There's a word I'm looking for, but it isn't coming to me.) One responder mentioned Asian culture was more focused on the family unit rather than the individual, and another said they went out and partied with the best of them. Both are Asian. What's the difference? The cultural situation they currently reside in. And it doesn't have to be a place overseas, it can be right down the street.

What I wish is we could respect and appreciate differences rather than make judgments about many of them.

Pressure from schools and epectations from their parents. Since so many asian students are competitive with their grades and being the best, everyone else then has to study harder and be the best that they can be or else they'll get left behind.

It's mostly a cultural thing.

I'm Asian, and I don't like to study.
All I do is skim through my notes before a quiz or test and just wing it.
I am really smart, and I get straight A's.
I have a lot of friends, and I'm a semi-social person.
Books are not my thing.

It is because their parents demand obedience and honorable conduct from their children. Today there are more millionaires being made in China and India than there are in America. They consider their long term bank balances to be more important than any social skills and they know that it takes alot of money to feel secure in a foreign country. They are not shy but their English language skills suffer from lack of use.

You said it all! Some do not but most are shy and study all the time. They believe in Benjamin Franklin's saying," The secret to success is Education.--- Which is true.

We don't want your pity, jackoff. Not all of us study ad nauseum. Ooh... so sorry we want to actually contribute to the status of the economy, rake in the big money, and have a decadent life. What's pitiful is the utter stupidity exhibited by the inhabitants of the US. I am not saying all, but most are too idiotic and unable to converse with any signs of intelligence whatsoever as easily as we Asians are able to. *cough**cough* Where the f*ck do you live? Hickville? Because in Cali, we talk and go out and have fun as much as the next white, Hispanic, or African-American kid, okay? Sheesh... don't judge like that, numbnut.

Maybe you shouldn't stereotype.

You wouldn't like it if it was against woman or your hair color.

Asians have the right idea. They are not lazy like us americans and they are the leaders in economics and buisness.

They have standards and they have pride and a sense of responsiblity to themsevles, their families, their parents and to their society.
