I'm not sure what controversies you are looking for. Abraham is a Biblical name. Their family read the Bible constantly. Lincoln is probably English or European, not sure. He is self taught, didn't go to school but taught himself law and became a lawyer. Read everything he could get his hands on and was very knowledgeable about most things. Most historians would consider him a genius in keeping the nation together during one of the worst times of American history. Trauma? His mother died when he was nine. Lost a true love when he was living in New Salem at around the age of 22. But losing loved ones is not uncommon during those times. Lincoln ran for US Congressman and lost several times, but did win. He ran for president once and won, of course. I think he is one of the greatest Presidents to have ever shared this land with us. You should definitely read more about him.

Since America is a melting pot of all nationalities and ethnic groups this is impossible to discern.

I think that the best way to characterize Lincoln is as a white American

Lincoln was American that's all anyone needs to know. But his surname is a dead giveaway his family came from Lincolnshire in England. He probably had a good mix like most of us Americans.
