I'm not sure that raciest is the word i would use, but I personally feel that a person who lives in this country should have to learn to speak English and understand it or they should go to what ever country where they can speak the language. I get really upset when I am trying to explain a problem at work and the other person just smiles at me and I know they don't have a clue what I am trying. How am I suppose to explain to them? What if its life or death?

English is one of the most difficult languages to learn.
It is full of inconsistencies, does not follow the patterns that other languages do and some words have two completely different meanings.
Add to that the fact that slang or colloquial terms are used without thought and sometimes English speaking people from other countries have difficulty with the language as well.
You don't say where you're from, I'm from New Zealand, terms we use here are misunderstood even in Australia, our closest neighbour.
Are you sure they refuse to learn? or is it just that they tend to keep to their own ethnic group because they feel safer there and so do not absorb at the same rate as those who mix more freely?

I don't know if it is racism, but I do think it is unfair. In order to have rights, we Americans must be willing to let others have their rights.
They have the right to be proud of and speak their own language, however I do think it is a bit much for them to be mad when you cannot understand, this I can understand will frustrate you. If they truly wish to be understood, they should not expect for the rest of the world to learn their language.
Understand also that they may not be mad because you cannot understand, but more frustrated by it.

There are lots of people who don't speak English, and the vast majority of them have no need to do so. Anyone who immigrates to a country where English is the primary language, and does not pick it up after 20 years exposure is simply being lazy -- and cutting himself off from much of the opportunity that he immigrated in order to obtain.

Well i don't really think its racist only because it is the truth i hate that when people come over the us border and cant speak English. It is becoming a real problem they started only hiring teachers at schools that can speak Spanish and English. It pisses me off so bad because all they do is talk crap about us in "their " language and of coruse i don't understand.I think all of them should have to learn English not us.

they are not mad at you. They are just frustrated. If they didn't have a good foundation in their first language, it's really hard to learn another language. Not everyone is good at learning a new language. It is really hard is people use slang. I have been trying to learn Spanish for years. I still can't keep up with T.V. shows on a spanish channel. Their frustration is from not knowing enough vocabulary.

I think that if someone is going to come into the United Stated they should be required to learn the English language. If we went to their country we would be expected to learn their language. What is good for one person is good for the other!

You mean people that can't "SPEAK" english? I say work with them and give them time to learn it while they are here if they are new to the country.
