Well, based on popularity, it seems that Airplane! is the winner (even by looking at these answers). However, when it comes to the question of which has made more money, Airport is the winner; total US gross was $100,489,150, whereas Airplane! had just $83,453,539. Of course, this doesn't include things like rentals, so maybe Airplane! has taken over by now.

Well, accoriding to Wikipedia, Airplane (1980) made $80 million at the box office and $40 million in video rentals, totalling $120 million. Airport (1970) made over $100 million in the box office, and an unknown amount in video rentals. So, to answer your question, Airport actually (1970) made more at the box office, and it might have made more in video sales than Airplane (1980) since there was ten years in between the two movies, though the VCR was still very new in the early 70's.

In my opinion Airport is more popular but i think airplane has made the most money thus far
