Here is my understanding...When you have used your harddrive for a long period of time, the files you have used and deleted, or moved, uninstalled or whatever, leave empty spaces between files that were installed after them, but before you removed them. That spreads the files out over larger spaces within your harddrive.

When you defrag, it moves the files that are supposed to be in succession, or are from the same program or what have you, so they are closer. The idea is to move all the empty sapce to the end, so your computer runs faster and smoother.

yes, defragging surely helps to open files easier. this is because when defragging, the pc is like arranging your files in an orderly manner. when you are saving files, the files are just saved to any cluster location in your harddisk so notice before you defrag, you'll see a lot of spaces in between while on the process of defragging, your pc will look for files that will fill up the spaces. it's like your things are clattered around your room and placing and orginizing them in just one cabinet. things will be easier for you when you want to find something, right? so, we really need to defrag our computers.

points appreciated..thanks

It will make your system run better. It makes all the same files go together and then when it's organized you will have more space

It really is just squashing everything up together rather than being sprawled out everywhere. saves space. runs more efficiently.
