I used to live in Pittsburgh, I remember that.
Kinda like some folks call Soft drinks "pop" and others call it "soda".
In Wisconsin, some call a water fountain a "bubbler". Interesting and amusing to learn about regional differences across the country.

Been to Pittsburgh, never heard them called gum bands. Rubber bands everywhere I've lived. Must be the same as "soda" or "pop".

Rubber stuff was always called gum - in the old days! My friends from New Zealand call rubber boots - gum boots! And, I'm NOT saying you are old! Okay?

I say rubber-band, but that's pretty intersting. I've never heard of a gum-band before.
