Mix some salt into some white vinegar. This gets pennies shiny clean! You can also use baking soda instead of salt (sodium bicarbonate instead of sodium chloride), but be aware this is how you make volcanoes too.

When my pennies become tarnished (green looking) I simply put the pennies in a pot of hot water filled with soapy water. I used dish washing liquid. I let them sit a minute or two. I then swish them around until they are all cleaned. I dump the pennies in a strainer and rinse them off. I take a few at a time a dry them with an old towel and leave them in an open container to make sure that they are completely dry.

old pennies are mixed in with the new. you will have to look at every penny that you acquire to find the really old ones.

Good Luck.

Any of the answers you have received will work ----but--if you are planning to keep the pennies for their possible value as a collection --DO NOT CLEAN THEM!! Cleaning them will decrease their value. Ask a coin dealer before you try to clean them. Of course, if you just want nice shiny pennies, go ahead!!

First of all you do not clean cents. In the USA they are called cents, pennies in Great Britain. A rare cent can go from a thousand dollars to fifty dollars real fast. Coin collectors will not buy cleaned coins unless they are very rare and only because they may not be able to afford a non cleaned one. Go to a coin dealer he has lots of old cents, some very cheap, especially the cleaned ones. He may even sell mixed date rolls. Real old cents can be kind of expensive. There are Indian head cents that are cheap even in middle to higher grades.
