I recently heard news that alpha lipoic acid is a great anti-aging supplement. I have also heard reports about a new supplement called resveratrol that has been found to dramatically increase the lifespan in yeast cells. Although going from increasing the lifespan in yeast cells to increasing it in humans is a huge jump can you give me any advice on supplements that have been proven to extend the human lifespan besides basic anti-oxidants.

I have been taking Alpha lipoic for 9 years. I am now 39 soon to be 40.............I think it works well.
One lesser known reason for such use is that supplementation with Lipoic acid helps to compensate for reduced intake of red meat and animal fats, (which modern athletes now tend to avoid), which otherwise happen to be rich sources of Lipoic acid.

The Metabolic Antioxidant, Alpha Lipoic Acid neutralizes free radicals, protects the body's genetic material, slows aging, and protects against heart disease and cancer. During aging a protein called NF-kappa-B builds up in cells and binds to the DNA and slows DNA function. This leads to a weakening of the immune system, faster aging of the skin and functional impairment in other body systems. Alpha Lipoic Acid (and also glutathione/reduced glutathione) helps block the binding of NF-kappa-B to cellular DNA. This results in a younger and less wrinkled skin. In animals, Alpha Lipoic Acid has anti-atherosclerotic effects.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TELOMERES AND TELOMERASE AND THE ROLE THEY PLAY IN ANTI-AGING.

In 1971 Dr. Alexey M. Olovnikov published a theory in which he first formulated the DNA end (telomeres) replication problem and explained how it could be solved. The solution to this problem also provided an explanation for the Hayflick Limit (the 125 year ceiling on the human lifespan), which underpins the discovery of in vitro and in vivo cell senescence (deterioration). Telomeres are a repeating DNA sequence of 6 RNA/DNA pairings, (A-T,A-T,T-A, C-G,C-G,C-G). When a cell divides, the new DNA cannot complete it's final pairing thus telomeres get shorter with each cell division. We are conceived with 15,000 pairs of telomeres, are born with 10,000 pairs and generaly die when we hit 5000 pairs. Telomerase is an enzyme which when activated in the cell provides a sort of "platform" as it where, so that the new DNA strand is able to complete. The telomerase enzyme attaches to the end of the chromosome; complementary bases to the RNA template are added on the 3' end of the DNA strand. Once the lagging strand is elongated by telomerase, DNA polymerase can add the complementary nucleotides to the ends of the chromosomes and the telomeres can finally be replicated.
. It used to be thought that telomerase production promoted cancer since cancer cells themselves have the telomerase enzyme turned on, however the latest research by Dr. William Andrews, the discoverer of the telomerase enzyme, has shown the opposite to be true. Ctiating telomerase in healthy cells around a tumer will cause a cancerous tumor to reduce. This is due mainly to boost in the bodies natural immune functions. Human Growth Hormone Enhancers are really good. They are the amino acids. I have been taking them for 3 months, and I lie not: they have given me much to be happy about! If consistently taken, you reap many benefits. I researched ALL products for over three months, and I learned alot. The HGH shots are tremendously high in price, only with prescription. You see, we lose HGH production after the age of 30 or so. I have been taking AL acid for about 2 years. It definitely has made improvements in my skin. I also take Hyaluronic Acid. Which is good too. There is WAY too much info about it...but here are a few really good sites.....http://www.21stcenturyhgh.com/human-growth-hormone-faq.htm

These should lead you to many others. Don't get suckered, tho!!
Most oral supplements, cannot and do not work. This is the latest and greatest in the health field, and everyone is on the bandwagon to cash in. It does work, but you have to be really smart about it. RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH.
Please, go to these sites and find out.
I am not a salesperson, I am just helping you to find the info

All Oxidants are known to expedite the aging process. However, there is no cure for ageing, all you can do is slow down the ageing of your cells (and thereby body on a whole) so that they look and work in a fine condition as much as they used to in their young age. The best way to slow down is to take more of anti-oxidants that are in the nature. Eating more of Vitamin C and E containing fruits and vegetables should help.

There is few of the old ones and one brand new which does slow down the shortening of telomeres causing the aging. A telomere is a region of repetitive DNA at the end of a chromosome, which protects the end of the chromosome from deterioration. e-mail me, if you are interested.

the best anti aging suppliment is making sure you get 8 hours sleep and eat a lot of greens -- everyone looks better than anglos because anglos don't eat greens -- try eating caldo verde on a regualar basis -- its a portuguese soup made out of kale and potatos. and SLEEP! you need 8-9 hours of sleep a night even if you think you don't.

"supplements that have been proven to extend the human lifespan besides basic anti-oxidants."

NONE.
There are NO supplements that have been PROVEN to extend the human lifespan. Even the anti-oxidants, which looked promising, have failed when they were examined critically. (Vitamin E was actually found to be HARMFUL, which was a surprise to the investigators!)
