My nephews have parents who BUY them everything and they just love it when I take them out for their b-days or holidays. I don't know how close you are to the child, but instead of BUYING a ticket to a sporting event, it may be nice to TAKE him. Or, instead of BUYING a gift certificate, TAKE him out for lunch w/ one of his best friends at spot he likes (most kids like pizza joints or buffets) then end the day by stopping at the store of his choice to purchase a gift.....let him pick out perhaps 3 items and then you choose which 1 of the 3 you ourchase.

Can you ask the parents to not buy things a month or so before his birthday, and then give the hints to you? I have the same problem with my husband -- he buys everything he wants (that's affordable!), and I can never figure out a good gift for him.

If not, gift certificates are a little tacky, but often very appreciated. Just put it in a very thoughtful card, and maybe add something about how you felt on your 12th birthday -- it's the last one before the teen years, and it could be a little nerve-wracking. (-: I know, it's a little corny.

Oh, how about this -- a treasury bond that will mature on his 18th birthday? Just in time for college! Or, can you buy one stock in his name in a sports company? Or a square foot of land in a deserted island. He's probably at the age where "grown-up" stuff like this would be cool -- especially if he doesn't have to take care of it, just have it.

One final idea: a magazine subscription to a sports magazine or something you think he'd like.

You could buy him a gift certificate ... tickets to an upcoming professional game, books on sports history, or DVDs on his favorite sports teams ....

I'd go with a gift card...especially one that looks like a credit card. Would make him feel very grown up. Just be sure that fees aren't subtracted.

I've given passes (2) to the movies or to a video rental store along with microwave popcorn and boxes of theatre candy. My godson liked it.
