Current science holds that the impact of comets on the newly-formed Earth left behind water and carbon without which life as we know it can't exist. From there, it was evolution.
Pandora's Box is a Greek myth and doesn't exist outside of literature. Another variation on this myth is the forbidden fruit in The Garden of Eden. Life was perfection until the box was opened/the fruit was tasted.
I've only seen the first Tomb Raider, so I can't comment on the "theories" in the movie.
