Edgar Allan Poe was born in 1809, in Boston, MA., and died in 1849.
He was admired for his romantic poems, his tales of terror and his detective stories. His Gothic writings were more symbolic poems and tales, which had an atmosphere of mystery and his characters represented conflicting feelings and values for the time period he wrote.
His wife died of tuberculosis which caused him to drink heavily. With a lot of tragedy in his life, one night when he was in Baltimore, he was found lying outside a voting place and died in a hospital four days later without regaining consciousness. To this day, his death is a complete mystery.
To me it is odd people of that time period enjoyed his writings so much. In today's society, that gore is typical in movies and plays, but back then, they were considered macabre, yet well accepted.

He died in Baltimore when they found him on the street and years later a forensic team looked at the case study and decided based on his symptoms that he most likely died of rabies. Reader's Digest did an article about this a few years ago. In Pennsylvania, we have the Poe festival in Mount Hope where there is a mansion and this time of year they tell different Poe stories. It's a lot of fun and the actors are great. If you live near here you should check it out.

He was a druggie. Most of his stories came from the drug induced state. He was very sick most of his life. He'd often fall into a coma like sleep. He was very afraid that he'd be buried alive. He had very specific instructions, as to how he was to be buried.
1. above ground vault. Easier to get out of.
2. air holes in coffin. A live person needs to breath.
3. a latch to open the coffin from the inside. Away out of the coffin.
4. food, water, lantern, matches and blanket in vault. Necessities for waiting to be released from the vault. One does get a little hungry after a long nap!
5. an outside bell with a pull inside the vault. Got to get someones attention in order to be released.
6. a heat stove with supplies. It might be cold out, plus the smoke may bring someone sooner.
His request was not honored.
My understanding was that he died in a ditch.
His life had taken a tragic turn(thus the reason for the drugs).
This was related to me via a descendant of the Poe family.
No lie, his name was Edgar Allen Poe.

Poe, American author and cryptanalyist, wrote many short stories, some of them quite gruesome. He was good at solving ciphered messages, and offered to solve any simple substitution cipher that was submitted to him. On one submission he failed; it turned out (ca. 1976) that the message was a poyalphabetic substitution rather than the simple substitution that was specified.
