I would get her a sanyo SCP-2400, this is a full-function phone. You have a parental control section, that only you have the code for. Block/allow web, incoming calls, outgoing calls, text messing. or you can set certain # that are only allowed to be sent/received. There is no camera on this phone tho. Its only from Sprint PCS. This phone also has a ready link (walky talky) and if you have a ready link phone from sprint, that's instant communication ( up to 5 people at a time) Its way better than the cheap "kid" phones, and you can allow more things on the phone as your son gets more mature. (its a flip phone, and comes in 5 colors: Pink, Blue, Silver, Dark Bronz, and Black) Also, you have a finding feat. You can see a map of were your kid is, by picking up the signal from the phone, i dont know much about that tho. You look at the map on your computer, and a little icon show where your kid is!

From the way your question is worded, it seems like she has already made up your mind. Is it good parenting to let a 12 year old have unlimited, uncontrollable access where she can communicate with strangers? Is there a company that makes a child friendly phone that only holds a few numbers that can be locked in by the parent?

I wouldn't get a regular cell phone. I would get a Verizon Migo. It only holds a certain amount of phone numbers, and only those numbers can be called. I am pretty sure that the phone also has a tracking system in it also.

Here is a link to the phone I am talking about :

I also think other wireless services have similar phones.

get her a firefly phone. It's a special phone that only allows the user to call the numbers that you program into the phone. There are three buttons, END, SEND and MENU. She can not dial numbers only a list of about twenty contacts that you, her parent or guardian programs into her phone. You can program, her friends' number, 911 emergency, your phone number etc. This way, you know who she is calling, and don't have to worry about how she'll use it. It's the perfect compromise, and when she's older, you can upgrade her to a real phone.

it's not a bad idea but you have to be very careful. I would get a prepaid phone from whatever service, so they can't go over thier minutes or whatever

Yes, for his convenience and your piece of mind. Get a prepaid for emergency/necessary calling only.
