A MAGNET will only pick up ferrous metals. Like iron, steel, except quality stainless steel,
Normally the only elements that are ferromagnetic at room temperature are iron, cobalt and nickel, joined by gadolinium if the weather is not too hot.

Gold doesn't react to a magnant.
You said the flower beds, correct? With gloves and boots, just search around...you should be able to find it. Use something that can reflect because with the sun and the ring, it should reflect and you should see something shiny!

A Metal Detector is your best answer, and also fishing around looking for a reflection in the sun is also a good idea. Good luck, you might find it by luck as well.

Get a metal detector.
You could pick one up at Radio Shack, or cheaper on ebay.
