What I was told, and you seem to agree, is to 'feel it' rather than think about it.

It's really open to interpretation, which I like. The astronaut "goes into" the monolith (the hershey bar thing) and has quite a life-changing experience. In the book, if I remember, the place he ends up is some kind of a zoo (y'know, that room where he sees himself becoming an old man), and that kind of explains all the weird background noises in that sequence. He obviously dies and is reborn as part of the universe - the star child.

Basically, with 2001: A Space Odyssey, and 2010, you have a story of Humanity's first encounter with alien beings, in the form of a large monolith (big stone) that is not just a stone, it is a piece of their technology similar to our country's experiments with sending probes throughout the galaxy. When our race encountered this technology, it began to affect the crewmembers who came into contact with it, and choosing the most likely candidate for evolutionary advancement. When he entered the monolith, he was genetically engineered to become a sort of "super-human," showing the true potential of our species.

I read the book before I saw the movie, so I had no problem with Bowman's metamorphosis. Often, you get more detail from the printed page--movies have a time constraint.

its meant for anyone to be interpretted how they want it to be.
thats why stanley kubrik never told anyone what the movie, let alone the movie was supposed to be about
i personally think its supposed to be about rebirth, thats why near the end the giant baby appears.

If you suddenly 'knew everything'; it would really be a new beginning.
I'd want to start with a clean slate....
