I drive a Chevy Cavalier 2002. I was driving today in Los Angeles with the air conditioner on. It was not more than half a mile of driving when I made a left hand turn and the car SHUT DOWN. The engine, the air conditioner, everything and I came to a stop. I turned the ingnition off THEN turned the key and the car started up again. Will this happen again? Is this anything I need to be concerned about? Why did it shut off?

you may think i am crazy, but i think that you just might have put too much strain on the engine .... i mean it's a cavalier, which means it has a 2.2L engine .... those aren't really a powerful engine to start with, and since it's a 2002 model, it's probably due or past due for a tune-up.... more than likely what happened is that your engine is rather weak anyway(not trying to put down your car), and it's lost some power due to lack of maintence tune-up, plus you said you had the a/c on, and you were making a left hand turn-probably of which was a rather sharp turn, and you literally "bogged" the engine down, and it shut off .... that would explain why it started right back up .... trust me, i have seen it happen several times .... try tuning it up(spark plugs and wires, fuel filter, etc ....) and try not to turn the steering wheel all the way to one side and hold it while making a sharp turn at low speeds with the a/c on

Car Cuts Off When Turning

I had a similair problem and so did my father in law. My problem was a bad fuel pump. When I turned the vehicle, it didnt have enough pressure to make it through the fuel injection system and
cut off.
My father in laws problem was a fuel sensor. When he turned either left or right in his Chrysler van, his motor would cut out and fire right up after he got on a straight away.
Have someone you know (either a shop or a friend) throw a code tester on it also. It may show the sensor and save a few bucks.

Your car is a REPUBLICAN!

As an auto mechanic, all I can tell you is you need to have someone qualified inspect your vehicle.

today's cars are so complex, you could literally have one of a hundred thing causing this to happen,

For your own benefit, take careful note of all conditions when this occurs, as this will help out you and the tech repairing your car,

when does this happen, right after start up, after driving many miles hot, cold starting then driving, only in the rain, only when the A/C is on,

telling this kind of info to the tech will save you money as it will speed his diagnosis

Take your car to an Autozone or Murray's if you have one in your city. Have them check your battery and alternator. Also check the post wires on your battery. Wiggle them around while the car is running and see if the lights flicker or if the clock resets. Nine times out of ten, your batter post probably have some corrosion around them. That is very inexpensive to clean. Bottom line is that there is a power issue. Don't fret, It probably won't cost more than $500 to repair but will probably be less that $100. Good luck.

Some vehicles are equipped with a shut-off device in case of a roll over (to prevent fires) but since the Cavalier is a low end model I doubt that it would be equipped with such a device. BUT if it is it sounds like it is mal-functioning.

Two things I can think of. 1st is the ignition control module (which suck on 4 cylinder GMs). The second is if your key has a microchip, somehow the shutoff with the chip was triggered. Either way, you should take it in and let the mechanics do a diagnostic. If it's the ICM, they should find it.

Maybe a problem in the ignition switch. Try turning the same way a few times - see what happens. Or maybe you have a car that can only make right turns.

Also don't forget about the fuel sloshing to one side of the tank. Sometimes the pick-up gets knocked off causing this.
