I had heard awhile ago that they expanded their stores too quickly and had to start closing stores due to serious losses. THey are still in my state though (MI). Usually co.'s will close unprofitable locations and only keep the profitable ones open.

Grew too fast until the anti-obesity movement gained some steam which resulted in stores being shuttered. Franchisee bankruptcies in certain market areas had little or nothing to do with Krispy Kreme's overall contraction because new franchisees can always be identified.

Down sizing, I live in NC near Winston-Salem, home of those damn things. I hate'em, their good and they pack on the pounds.
