Each year, I get maybe 120 adorable kids visiting my house, ranging in age from babes-in-arms to the young teen set. I'm delighted to offer them sweets, chocolates and Realistic Rubber Squeaking Rats.

My problem is the older set, who show up later: those who are clearly 17 or 18, but still trying to cash in on the free treats. They don't even make an effort wth a proper costume!

I have no desire to shut the door on them (after all, they are older, and proportionally more clever), but I'd like to know what to say to these people...if anything!

Thanks for your input, and Happy Halloween!

My Dad always had a solution for them: He'd line the back of the bowl with little boxes of rasins. If you didnt have a costume on hed drop you a couple boxes of those dried grape goodies ;)

Good question I get these as well, but have just excepted that no matter the age....If they wear a costume, I give a treat....No matter what the costume might be, they still have worked for the treat...After all, it does only come once a year, so I don't get too bothered by it....You could always get different gifts for them...Possibly a old toy one of your kids might have had when they were younger...This might stop the older ones from knocking on your door again LOL Good luck and Happy Halloween to you as well....

P.S. Give them a small box of prunes...Or when they come to the door, tell them all you have is prune juice, theyre welcomed to a glass...That'll get em runnin (giggles)

Well, what we do is look in the window or through the hole in the door before opening it, especially if my younger sister opens it. If they are older just don't open the door. They will leave sooner or later. Or even better, leave the door closed, and for these cases, leave a cheap container of candy on the porch. So, if they take it, it won't bother you and they still will be partially satisfied.

Post a sign on your door- "No Costume, No Candy"

If they still come without costumes, you have the right to shut the door in their face because you have made it clear that have to at least make an effort to dress up for Halloween.

I agree with you, I think 17 and 18 year old, especially boys, come knocking on doors are way too old. They also do inapropriate things such as teepee someone's house! I think you have the right to close the door on them and don't give them candy. Tell the old rascals if you do anything stupid, I will call the cops on you. You can give them one bar of candy each, and tell them bye. Luckily, they will leave and nothing will harmed.

I wouldnt say anything. Just give them their candy. There is not an age limit on trick or treating although to some people such asmy self I would not go out trick or treating and once my kids reach a certain age I will not let them go out either. But there is nothing you can do but be yourself, be polite, and give them some candy. It is Halloween.......

You could answer "Find a costume and get a treat" Just something to discourage them. Hopefully they come back next year looking like Freddy Crouger.

Most little kids with parental chaparones get out early to trick or treat...so when it starts to get late maybe 8 or 9pm I usually turn my outside lights off and don't answer the door.

I say just talk to them like older teenagers. Let them enjoy it. Trick or treating is one of my best memories. Hell I'm still trying to go and I'm twenty. But i can shave look like im 16. I can sound cute.
