THere are lots of books on animal communication on Amazon.com. So many people have stories about their animals listening and understanding them...not just the commands they are taught but concepts of love and trust etc. When I rescued my dog from the shelter I layed down some ground rules for her. One of them which was weird...but I told her anyway....I told her that if she is ever on her own she must always stay on the sidewalk and NEVER go onto the black surface on her own. One week after I had her, I took her to my exboyfriends, whose house smelled like him and cat pee (not a nice combo) and she bolted out of the house and ran for about a 1/2 of a mile...always on the sidewalk.

I adopted her even though her previous owner said she was not house broken. I brought her home and told her that she always had to use the restroom outside...unless she was very ill, I explained that accidents happen and i wouldn't be mad. She had never gone to the bathroom in the house due to housetraining. She has gone out of fear a few times but only about 3 since I took her from the shelter (not that many for a dog who was labled not house broken).

Try it with your animals. See what happens.

I don't just believe it, through the years I have learned it. My dogs understand a lot more than the 12 or so spoken words that dog trainers tell you they can understand. For example, I use entire sentences my dogs, and they slink away if they are being bad. My ex-husband used to hate this as they would never listen to him or come to him. Dogs are quite perceptive, if you hit them, they tend not to pay much attention except to stay out of harm's way.

Hmmm if I tell my dog to sit he sits, if I tell him to stay he stays, if I tell him its time for bed he goes to his room, if I say I am going to go for a ride he grabs his leash. I would say yes they can understand us perfectly well.

It is when they choose to listen is another story. If they see a squirrel outside and dart out the door after it and you call them all of a sudden they become deaf. If you come in and there is garbage all over the floor from them getting in the garbage can and all I have to do is look at him and he knows he did wrong but as soon as you say something to him he acts like he has no idea what you are talking about.

Dogs are very smart they know and understand what you are saying it is they just pick and choose what they want to hear.

I believe that dogs can understand a lot, not everything, but a lot. They're simple, yet intelligent, animals. Dogs are definitely man's best friend.

They get familiar with certain words, commands and tones. But as far as actually understanding our language, absolutely not.

Here is a test to prove it, lets say your dog responds to the word car, then say the word par and you will probably get the same reaction. Or use an inquisitive tone "you wanna desk?" and they will probably get excited.
see what I mean?

Yes. They seem to pick up on something inside of us human beings can't even come close too.

Then they heal us, and send us back out into the world renewed and refreshed.

They are like our own personal support group, better even. They give their full vote for "whatever it is good for us to do", not neccessarily anything and everything we choose to do!

Well, we can't say "walk" anymore because they recognize the word. So we started spelling it, but then they figured out W A L K meant walk.

So we started saying "HmmHmm" and we're waiting for them to catch on to that.

Frankly my dear, I don't give a dog's fart... and least not until I realize that humans can actually understand other humans
