To do system restore:

Click on start - then help and support - on the right you will see a link to System Restore - click on it.

select restor my computer to an earlier time. follow the instructions and you will see a calendar - select a bold date/time which is BEFORE you had a problem with your machine and select it - follow the simple on screen instructions - you'll have to reboot your machine etc and all will be done.

What's the problem with your colours - you might not need to do a restore to fix it.

I agree with minotaur.. make sure you need to do a restore. remember not all things are monitored by the Systems Restore and you could end up losing data.

Click Start, bring pointer of mouse up to Programs (don't click). A list of programs will feather out to the right side. Put your pointer there in that column. In XP only the last used programs will show. If that is the case then click on the arrows and the rest of the programs will open up. Bring pointer up to Accessories (don't click). Another group of programs will feather out to the right. Place pointer in that column. Bring pointer down to System Tools (don't click). Another group of programs will feather out to the right. Put Pointer in that column. Bring pointer down to System Restore and click on that. Now you are there. Follow instructions.
