The first day of Samhain which is the Irish word for November was celebrated as 'Oiche na Sprideanna' (Spirit Night), the Feast of the Dead. The Celts, like many cultures, started every day at sunset of the night before. The dead were honoured and feasted, not as the dead, but as the living spirits of loved ones and the guardians of the wisdom of the tribe. They believed that the living and the dead were at their closest on this night but that evil spirits might also attempt to collect as many souls as they could. So they disguised themselves as members of the spirit world to confuse any devils that might be about. This is where the tradition of dressing up comes from.

During the 8th century, the Christian Church was unable to get the people to stop celebrating this holiday, so, as they did with many pre-Christian feast days, they adapted them. The first day of November was designated as All Saints Day - 'All Hallows' hallow meaning holy. Thus the night before became 'All Hallows Eve' which was shortened to Hallow-e’en.

halloween is not for the devil, the early americans are the ones that started the halloween reputation.back two thousand years ago it was a festival called samhain.and it was widely celebrated from the celtic people over in ireland.the festival was celebrated for harvest time and a beginning and an end of the year.the festival is meant to be for people to think about the harvest time and to celebrate the fact to harvest one's true soul.to become closer to the Gods and the Goddesses.the samhain festival is still widely celebrated still in ireland and in the united states by pagans and wiccans.which in one case i am a dark pagan of the wicca religion.the fact that where halloween became to being called the devil's holiday is like i said from the early americans.because of the christians forming a picture of the satan as a beast with horns.the beast with horns is a true God.which is the God of life from ancient Greece.and that is how the halloween started was from the early christians.they make it sound like it is the devil's holiday but the true wiccans and pagans really know the whole story of the holiday of halloween.there are some sites that you can go to learn more of the festival samhain.here are some down below that explains it all in better detail.hope this helps you some.

Hi, Jestine!

No, dear, Halloween has nothing to do with the Devil...at all.

It's a harvest festival, and most every temperate-climate farming culture has, or had, one. The American version is Thanksgiving; the old English version is Halloween.

There was once the belief that the spirits of the dead could return for one night on this date.

No one believes this anymore, of course!

Happy Halloween!

YES! Halloween is an evil holiday in which people try to cover up by handing out candy to little kids, but many teenagers go around destroying things, and many cults and witchcraft celebrate this day, so this day should not be supported in any way whatsoever, Halloween should be removed from people's calendars and condemned! Cohorts of Satan do not need to be assisted by recognizing their holiday! It is EVIL!

Come on, its just a fun day. Even if its possible pagan origins bother you, why? Pagan just means a religion that predates christianity. They didn't even believe in the devil, the devil is a Christian construct.
