I can remember as a child we used to say if you stood on a crack in the pavement a monster would get you but have not heard as grown ups it was just a game.

There was an AA Milne poem called something like lines and squares, in which the protagonist mulled at length over this phenomenon. I think it was bears that were lying in wait for anyone foolish enough to step on the though I think the 1906 San Fran. answer above is much better!

haha. This question reminds me of a game I used to play with my younger siblings. We would test who doesn't stand on any cracks on the floor because we had tiles in our house before in the Philippines. Actually it's just a superstitious belief and I think some people who believe this might have the condition OCD...

Superstitous is what it's called. i.e., a black cat cross your path, you stand under a ladder, you break a mirror (7 yrs. of bad luck), you stand on a crack (you break your momma's back), you walk around with one shoe on and one shoe off, a rabbit foot on your keychain (good luck purposes).

Haven't really got a clue, but remember from an early age mum telling me that the devil will get me if I stood on the cracks. Could possibly explain why I now walk funny....

I was angry at my mother and went out and jumped up and down on a crack in the sidewalk repeatedly--at that very moment, she fell off a ladder and broke her back just like the rhyme said!

Such people are ignorant and need to get rid of such superstitions, especially if they are religious or spiritual, for God makes it clear that belief in such superstitions are blasphemous to Him. The pavement crack superstition was one of the superstitions that just remained in society for some stupid reason.
