Apply for grants or loans which are not merit based.

But how bad is 1610 really? (I remember when 1600 was a perfect score.) It is more than the half-way point of 1200,

By the way, on the SAT I know that there is a penalty for guessing. Your score is better if you leave blank the ones you don't know. I don't about the ACT.

Good luck!

When you are low on money and your test scores aren't great, you should seriously consider community college. Usually, you don't even need to provide SAT scores to get in, but if you can put in a year or two earning good grades in community college, you can usually transfer those credits to a state college. In Maryland, if you get a B average in community college you are guaranteed to be able to get into a 4-year state college to complete your degree -- without having to take the SAT or ACT. Generally, the first year or two at college, you are taking more basic courses and it makes financial sense to get these out of the way at a more-affordable community college rather than paying the higher fees at a four-year college. And in the end, the degree you get from the four-year school is the same as if you spent all four years there! So don't despair. Talk to your guidance counselor about what options are best for you. You want to make sure the colleges you ultimately hope to attend will accept your community college credits (some private or out-of-state colleges will not always accept community college courses). Good luck and don't ever give up!

Community college is a great idea for students who aren't ready for a university for whatever reason - money, scores, family issues, etc. If the only thing that stands between you and scholarships is the Tests - if your GPA is great, and your extra-curriculars are solid - consider investing (or having your parents invest) in a prep course. The standardized tests are just a game, and if you know the rules and practice a bit, you can score the points and win. Meanwhile, check out some of the tips I posted in response to some other SAT-related questions.
good luck!
